Craniosacral Therapy

In a human body very few structures have more influence on total health then the nervous system and the main component affecting the nervous system is craniosacral system. Craniosacral system consists of the soft tissues and the craniosacral fluid which provide protection to the brain and the spinal cord.

Stress and Strain:

Human body goes through a lot of stress and strain every minute and keeps adjusting to this to maintain the balance. But there comes a stage when the tissues start tightening and affecting brain and the spinal cord. This results in the malfunctioning of nervous system which ultimately affects all other functions in the body.

What Does Craniosacral Therapy Do ?

This tension of brain and spinal-cord can be released with the help of craniosacral therapy which is a gentle-touch approach that facilitates self- correction in the body. Therapist investigates the internal environment of the body by very lightly touching it at various spots and then performs certain techniques to help body regain required correction.

This technique frees the central nervous system to function at its fullest capacity there-by allowing pain removal, strengthens immune system and improves over-all health and well-being. Person of any age including infants can be treated with the help of craniosacral therapy.

Discovery/Development of This Therapy

In early 19th century Dr. William Sutherland first discovered craniosacral bone movement and sensed that there was a “power” which generated corrections from inside his clients’ bodies without the influence of external forces applied by him as a therapist.

From 1975 Dr. John E Upledger set up a team of professionals at Michigan State University to investigate  the pulse he had observed and to study further Sutherland’s theory of cranial bone movement. He later developed his own treatment style called craniosacral therapy.

Conditions Craniosacral Therapy Can Help:

Craniosacral Therapy improves health and well-being by taking care of many conditions including pain, diseases and malfunctioning that include :

  • Central Nervous System
  • Post Traumatic Disorder
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Stress/ Tension Related Disorder
  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Brain and Spinal cord injuries
  • Scoliosis
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Infant and Childhood Disorder
  • TMJ Syndrom
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Orthopedic Problems
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Motor Co-ordination Impairments

What to Expect :

In a craniosacral therapy session, the patient remains fully clothed as he/she relaxes on the treatment table.

The therapist starts by gently touching different parts of the body to check the rhythm of fluid that is flowing around the central nervous system. The therapist will be able to locate the source of dysfunction through weak fluid flow or incorrect tissue motion. Gentle manual techniques will be applied to normalize those tight spots to improve the function of central nervous system. A typical therapy can last for an hour.

Craniosacral Therapy and Other Modalities:

CST can be very easily mixed with other modalities like massage and Reiki to have powerful outcome.
